This is the introduction to a presentation I did with Stacey Hensel, MA, MT-BC, LCAT, NRMT at the Mid-Atlantic Region of the American Music Therapy Association’s annual conference in Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago. It was entitled, “A Complicated Friendship:DIR and Music Therapy”, but truthfully, the relationship is not that complicated. I am always so glad to be amongst music therapists, as they are the natural allies of the relationship-based intervention that is DIR. They, and sometimes only they, can help kids with language disordersget into the continuous flow that is the essential element before the jump to abstraction. This video is my introduction to the presentation, with a quick overview of the DIR model, and so is a quick primer if you are just trying to understand basic concepts. I will post more from this presentation in coming days, and if Stacey agrees, I will put up her pieces about the music therapy intervention she does, Nordoff-Robbins, and it’s intersection with DIR.
