“Respecting Autism” is finally here!

26 Sep

Well, it’s finally here, the long awaited book that I wrote with Dr. Stanley Greenspan, Respecting Autism: The Rebecca School DIR Casebook for Parents and Professionals. It was a lot of work, but I cannot tell you how proud I am of the result. This is a promotional video created for the launch of the book, and it tells a little about the book in a couple of minutes. Here is a link to the book’s website, Respecting Autism, where you can see more about the book, the authors, and click on links to Barnes and Noble, or Amazon, among others, to buy the book. Or click here to buy it on Amazon, here to buy it on Barnes and Noble, or here to buy it at Powell’s. To take a quote from the book: “At Rebecca School we believe that everything we do originates with respect. Respect for the children we serve, respect for the staff with whom we work, and respect for the families of the children.” Here’s to respect!

John, You are responsible for much of my thinking about kids, intervention and autism. You have taught me, and continue to teach me, about how to reach kids, so thank you for buying a copy, but now you will have two, the one you bought, and the one where I write the dedication to a great friend and colleague. Talk to you soon, I hope.

Hey Gil, Thanks for your kind words. This, however, is your time to shine. You deserve it. I know how long and hard you worked on this book. Dr. G would be proud. This will be a great contribution to the field of autism and to the DIR communities. You know your stuff, man! Yes, hope to talk with you soon…John C

Congrats, Gil! Glad this finally came to fruition! I’m so happy to have a real-life copy in my hands…and to share it with my ABA-loving colleagues!) I’m already half-way through the book and it’s reminding of me of everything I love about the model and Rebecca School!

      Jen,

It’s so great to hear from you. I, of course, will be sending you a copy, as you are one of the brilliant Floortimers (I think I actually refer to you directly that way!) in the book. Please contact me off the record so I can send you your copy.
I too, am reminded about how great the work was and is at Rebecca School, and I am really proud to read the stories of how people did good work, in the right model. I am also inspired to read the parent stories, all of which you were present for. Then, of course, it is really nice to hear the voice of our friend, Stanley Greenspan, who held our feet to the fire in doing the right thing by kids and families.
Thanks for contacting me, I can’t wait to hear from you!
      Gil

    Gil:

Congratulations on the launch, and I can’t wait to read it. We’re overdue to spend some time together. I’d love to learn more about how you have gotten to this point with The Rebecca School. I’m excited for you and for what it means to other programs….

      Dave,
Thanks so much for the kind words. I can’t wait to collaborate with you, as you are a leader in this field of turning DIR into a school-based intervention. I believe we can change the way kids on the spectrum are being treated in many programs, and make a real difference in the future of a lot of kids.
Hope to talk to you soon,
      Gil
